Image
Dr. Rebecca Baskin is a breast surgeon at Williamson Medical Center and is a breast cancer survivor herself. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we were able to sit down with her and chat about her experience. Can you tell us a little bit about your story with breast cancer? Dr. Rebecca Baskin: So, I was actually diagnosed at 36 with breast cancer. At that time I was a general surgeon. I did a lot of breast surgery as well and actually found a lump when I was in the shower. My youngest was about 6 months old at the time and I had stopped breastfeeding and gone back to work. I was also younger than 40 so I had never had a mammogram before so that was my first episode of having a mammogram and ultrasound. There was a suspicious-looking mass on my imaging so very quickly had a core biopsy. I actually worked with one of my peers who helped me make decisions about what surgery I wanted and moved forward from there. Back then, there were two buckets you were in. You wer...

Tips on Trick-or-Treating Safely This Halloween

Image
Jasmine Terrell is a nurse practitioner at Vanderbilt Integrated Pediatrics in Tullahoma. By Jasmine Terrell, DNP, APRN, CPNP-PC Happy Halloween! As children get excited to don their costumes and trick-or-treat for candy, remember these important health and safety tips. Be Prepared Holidays are known for reckless drivers, and Halloween is no exception. More than twice as many children are killed walking on Halloween than any other day of the year. Make sure that children under 12 have adult supervision and, be sure everyone in the group knows how to unlock a phone to call 911 and easily get in touch with a parent or guardian if needed. Cell phones should be fully charged before venturing out, and members of the group should be equipped with flashlights. Children should walk, not run, from house to house on well-lit sidewalks when possible. If on the street, children should walk in the direction facing traffic, so they are alert to oncoming cars. Talk with your pedia...

Blue Raiders Finish Strong Against Miners

Image
The Blue Raiders started and finished strong in the Mountain time zone on Saturday evening, riding the wave of a 10-0 first quarter and 14-3 second half to blast past UTEP 24-13 in the Sun Bowl. The Blue Raiders (4-4, 1-3 C-USA) forced four three and outs on defense, never allowing the Miners (4-5, 2-3 C-USA) to sustain any momentum on the offensive side of the ball.  Jakobe Thomas  was excellent in his second career start, registering six tackles and recording his first career interception, setting up MTSU's first touchdown of the second half. The teams entered the locker room tied 10-10, after trading 10-point quarters to open the game. MTSU forced three 3-and-outs from the UTEP offense, accounting for half of the Miners' drives in the first 30 minutes and helping MTSU out to a 10-0 lead to start the game. But a final 14-play, 83-yard drive at the end of the second quarter resulted in a touchdown for UTEP, tying the game at the break. Chase Cunningham  completed 21...

Pretty in Pink Boutique Customer Amy Lysyczyn Shares Her Breast Cancer Story

Image
Amy Lysyczyn is a realtor, a mother of 3, and has been a resident of Rutherford County for 21 years. She is also a breast cancer survivor. We got the chance to chat with Amy regarding her experience with breast cancer and how local support from Pretty in Pink Boutique impacted her journey in a positive way. Can you tell us about your story with breast cancer treatment? Amy Lysyczyn: Mine’s a little bit unique. I was high risk. My aunt died from complications due to breast cancer about 25 years ago. Then, when I was 30 my best friend Erin died from breast cancer. It made me very hypervigilant and ironically, about five months after she died, I found my first mass and lump. We did a surgical biopsy and then that started regular mammograms. I’ve been having regular mammograms for a long time, I’m 45 now. About four years ago, they found a mass that they were monitoring and it kept changing and growing so we went in every three months. My doctor, Dr. Carter, who is retired...

Middle TN High School Football Game of The Week: Mount Juliet Golden Bears vs Green Hill Hawks

Image
For the first time in this new rivalry, it has a name. The Mayors Cup. The winning team will be presented with the symbol of the bragging rights that come with this Mount Juliet matchup every year, as Mount Juliet Mayor James Maness presents the winning team with the trophy. If that wasn’t enough, this game ended up being the region championship for this season. The environment was alive as The Hill had some of the biggest high school bleachers I had ever seen filled to the brim on the home and away sides. I caught up with The Mayor during the game, and you can hear that interview below. After an amazing entrance from Green Hill that you can watch below and the senior night festivities were over, it was time to get to business, and The Golden Bears wasted no time, as Osize Daniyan took the opening kickoff back 95 yards for the first touchdown of the night. Green Hill responded taking the ball inside the red zone with just two gashing runs. The Bears' defense stood tall and...
