15 Classic Late Summer Movies to Watch Before Fall Arrives

Image
As summer fades into fall, it is the perfect time to watch a classic summer film that makes one think of love, coming of age, and facing fears. There is something about the end of summer that makes one think of slowing down and enjoying simpler times, enjoying life, having a good laugh, and, of course, sometimes, it is about kicking alien butt. Here are 15 movies made between 1953 and 1996 that are perfect at catching that summer vibe. There are many others, but these are some classic pics. Roman Holiday (1953)  A romantic romp taking place in Rome, it tells the tale of princess Ann, played by Audrey Hepburn, who is overwhelmed by her suffocating touring schedule and takes off on a free evening after taking a sedative her doctor gave her. She is discovered asleep on a park bench by American reporter Joe Bradley, played by Gregory Peck, who takes her back to his apartment for safety only to discover she is royalty. Romance gets in the way of the exclusive interview he promis...

Riverdale escapes Beech in a Defensive Slugfest

Image
Riverdale was rocking in anticipation of the Warriors matchup against the 2022 6A runner up, the Beech Buccaneers. The Bucs had made the 55-mile trip through Nashville from Hendersonville to Murfreesboro and were looking to get back on track after a loss to a talented Collierville team last week. Riverdale was FA I g its second 5A-7 team in as many weeks after losing to Beech rival, Henry County, last week. Both teams were determined for different outcomes this weekend. Early on the game was a defensive war as both teams turned each other away, back and forth, deep into the first quarter. Then, the lid came off as the number 47 player in Tennessee, QB Braden Graham, found the number 11 player in the state CB/WR Jaylen Thompson, deep down the sideline to set the Warriors up in scoring position. Two plays later, Keshawn Williams cashed it in on a short pass from Graham. With 3:00 to go Riverdale led 7-0. Beech’s offense came back on the field looking for any daylight through what ha...

However, they have their work cut out for them sharing a district...

Acclaimed Music Producer Tony Mantor Launches Autism-Focused Podcast

Image
Tony Mantor began his journey toward bringing attention to autism when a woman working in speech therapy approached him about making a video featuring autistic people from Nashville to help related non-profits. Mantor had previously developed a video about first responders, and he gave the song he had written for it, “Why Not Me,” an adult contemporary beat to use in the new video. The autism video was created to bring awareness, acceptance and understanding of the condition. The video led to Mantor becoming the co-host of a podcast with model Jill Nicolini on PBN, heard on all major podcast platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. The podcast is called "Why Not Me The World." “This podcast is for the purpose of helping [those who] are … just learning about autism because it is in their family now, [and] for those who can tell their stories of raising children and how their life changed because of it,” said Mantor. Most of the people being int...

Wind Phone in East Nashville Offers Alternative Grief Therapy

Image
With the grief created by the recent losses caused by the mass shooting at The Covenant School still deeply entrenched in the psyche of the community, people are looking for ways to process their shock and sadness. Because everyone mourns differently, there are many different resources to help process that grief. One of them is a unique device borrowed from the Japanese. It is called a Wind Phone, and in February of this year, a young woman named Allison Young dedicated the one she had installed by her house in East Nashville to her dead grandmother. She has opened it to the community. “It’s important to offer as many different kinds of grief approaches as you can,” explained Young to News Channel 5 , “so you help as many people as you can when you’re dealing with grief.” The Wind Phone in Japan, which is Young’s model, is located in a sculptured garden on a cliff overlooking the sea where more than 1,600 died when the tsunami hit in 2011. It sits on the slopes of a mountain ca...

Image
In a recent study by wallethub.com , Tennessee came in 11 th overall for drug use problems, and 3 rd in Opioid Overuse, Overdose Deaths and Drug Arrests per Capita. Illicit drug use is an issue the country has been fighting since the 1970s, but the war on drugs is a never-ending battle. New drugs like fentanyl are simply the newest killing machines developed by the enemy.   Wallet Hub’s report, “Drug Use by State: 2023 Problem Areas” offers an attempt to locate problem states by comparing all 50 states and the District of Columbia “across 20 key metrics, ranging from arrest and overdose rates to opioid prescriptions and employee drug testing laws. ” Tennessee is one of those problem states.   There were more than 100,000 deaths attributed to an overdose in 2022 in the United States. According to White House figures released in January 2023, 148,594 pounds of illicit drugs were confiscated by law enforcement in the third quarter of 2022 alone, with a street value of more ...

The Commission is now taking applications to add additional historic cemeteries. THC hopes this map will be a valuable tool for historians, genealogists, developers, landowners, realtors, and state agencies for the purpose of preserving and protecting burial sites. The new registration process is intended to provide the public with a way to document historic cemeteries for the purpose of preservation efforts, this includes old cemeteries that are on private property. On social media, WKRN reports that people from Middle Tennessee and across the country were calling for members of the library staff to be fired because of these claims of disrespect and allegations that the librarians suppressed Cameron’s First Amendment rights.
